West Java Police Urge Public to Help Catch Thieves, But Warn Against Vigilantism

West Java Police are intensifying efforts to combat motorcycle theft, commonly known as 'begal,' urging public cooperation while warning against illegal vigilantism.

Kombes Pol Hendra Rochmawan, Head of Public Relations for the West Java Regional Police, stated that the police will take firm and measured action against begal perpetrators. He emphasized that this directive extends not only to law enforcement officers but also encourages public participation in apprehending suspects.

"Our first effort is the directive from the Kapolda for firm and measured action, clearly, and this is not just for the police, but the public can also participate," Rochmawan said on Tuesday (July 21, 2026). He stressed that the public's involvement must be 'firm and measured,' explicitly advising against any form of mob justice.

Rochmawan expressed gratitude for public involvement in tackling the begal problem. To further enhance security, the police plan to increase personnel deployment during the late-night and early-morning hours, particularly during holiday periods. The Kapolda has instructed all Polres chiefs to proactively anticipate and address begal activities in their respective areas.
