What is China’s aircraft carrier Liaoning testing – and why does it matter?

China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, has concluded a significant period of far-sea combat training, demonstrating advancements in its military capabilities. The carrier strike group returned to its home port in Qingdao after more than 40 days of intensive exercises conducted across multiple locations in the South China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean.

The participation of the Anhui, a Type 075 amphibious assault ship, alongside the Liaoning was a notable aspect of the exercises. Such combined operations between aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships are relatively uncommon, suggesting a deliberate effort to enhance joint operational capabilities and interoperability within the Chinese navy.
