What to Know About the 2030 FIFA World Cup: Dates, Hosts, Format

The 2030 FIFA World Cup is set to be a historic event, marking the tournament's centenary with an unprecedented multi-continental hosting arrangement. For the first time, the competition will span six countries across three continents, celebrating the World Cup's origins while accommodating a broader range of hosts.

Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will serve as the primary hosts for the tournament. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the inaugural World Cup held in 1930, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each host a single opening-round match. Uruguay's selection honors its role as the first host, Argentina's as the runner-up of that inaugural tournament, and Paraguay's as the home of CONMEBOL, the world's oldest continental football confederation.

The tournament is scheduled to commence with the centenary matches in South America on June 8 and 9, 2030. The official opening ceremony and the first matches in the main host countries of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are slated for June 13 and 14, with the final match scheduled for July 21, 2030. FIFA has confirmed that all six host nations, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, will automatically qualify for the tournament.

The remaining 42 teams will secure their places through FIFA's established continental qualifying competitions. The unique schedule ensures that teams involved in the early South American matches will receive additional time for travel, recovery, and preparation before joining the group stage in Europe and Africa. While the tournament is planned for 48 teams, mirroring the 2026 format, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has indicated that a proposal to expand to 64 teams will be considered.
