WhatsApp Launches Bill Payments in India for Electricity, Gas and Water Bills

WhatsApp has added bill payments in India, bringing electricity, gas, water and other routine household payments into the messaging app.

Users can tap the rupee icon at the top of the home screen, select a bill category and provider, add their account details, review the fetched amount and choose a payment method. The feature also lets them view past and upcoming bills and manage multiple accounts under one provider.

For millions of Indians, WhatsApp is already the simplest way to stay close to family and friends, talk to businesses, access citizen services, and buy everything from metro tickets to insurance, all without leaving the app.

WhatsApp said the service runs on the Bharat Connect, or BBPS, network. It covers more than 22,700 billers in 30 categories, including FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan repayments. Payments can be made through UPI, debit cards or credit cards.

The launch follows WhatsApp’s introduction of browser calling, which allows one-to-one and group audio and video calls through WhatsApp Web without a desktop application.
