When and how to plant tulips in autumn: Common mistakes to avoid

Tulips should not be planted too early in autumn. The best time comes when the soil has cooled but remains workable, giving the bulbs enough time to develop roots before permanent frost arrives.

A sunny location with good drainage suits tulips best. Low-lying areas can hold water after rain or snowmelt, increasing the risk that the bulbs will rot. The bed should therefore allow excess moisture to drain away.

Tulip bulbs already contain stored nutrients, so adding large amounts of fertilizer does not guarantee more flowers. If the soil is poor, gardeners can mix in well-rotted compost before planting. Concentrated fertilizer should not go directly into the planting hole because it can damage newly forming roots.

The hole should be about two to three times deeper than the bulb’s height. For many tulips, that means roughly 10 to 15 centimeters, though the exact depth depends on the bulb and soil. Bulbs can go slightly deeper in light, sandy soil and closer to the surface in heavy clay. Place each bulb with its pointed end up and flat base down.

Water the bed after planting if the soil is dry. Further watering depends on the weather, since rainy conditions do not require extra moisture. Before winter, gardeners can add a 5-7 centimeter layer of dry leaves, straw or another suitable material to reduce sharp temperature changes and provide more stable conditions for the bulbs.
