“When Heritage Is Revived” exhibition to open in Bishkek

Bishkek’s Gapar Aitiev Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts will open an exhibition on Sept. 8 devoted to the revival of Kyrgyz traditional crafts.

Titled “When Heritage Is Revived,” the project presents shyrdaks, felt products, decorative and applied art, and modern interpretations of national heritage created by artisans from different regions of Kyrgyzstan.

The exhibition portrays traditional craft as a living part of culture, not a fixed legacy. It focuses on the people preserving distinctive techniques, ornaments and knowledge passed from one generation to the next while giving them new expression in contemporary life.

The opening will also host the fifth national “Shyrdakchi of the Year” competition, bringing together craftswomen from across the country. The contest aims to support traditional artisans, draw attention to the unique technology used to make Kyrgyz shyrdaks and help preserve an important element of the country’s cultural heritage.

Live master classes, a musical program and an ethnic reception will accompany the opening. The exhibition will remain open to visitors until Sept. 20.
