Uruguay will observe the Feast of the Assumption, also known as Día de las Marías, on Saturday, August 15, 2026. This significant commemoration is central to the Catholic calendar and is observed in various countries, including Spain, Italy, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia.

The feast day centers on the belief that the Virgin Mary, upon the completion of her earthly life, was taken body and soul into heaven. For Catholics, the Día de las Marías is not only a celebration in honor of the Virgin Mary but also a day associated with hope and the prospect of life after death.

While the date was fixed in the 5th century, it officially became a Catholic feast in 1950 when Pope Pius XII proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption. This doctrine posits that Mary, due to her status as the Mother of God, was granted the privilege of being assumed into heaven without experiencing death in the conventional sense.
