'When you're young, you forget yourself'

The Kópavogur and Garðabær Golf Club (GKG) has implemented a new policy, increasing the minimum age for renting golf carts from 17 to 25 years old. This decision comes in response to an increase in golf cart accidents attributed to the reckless driving habits of younger players.

Agnar Már Jónsson, the general manager of GKG, explained that the club welcomes the growing number of younger golfers but notes that some lack sufficient respect for the golf carts. "As luck would have it, there has been a huge increase in this age group, fifteen and up, and it's good to have them playing golf," Agnar stated. "But we have noticed that young golfers have not shown enough respect for the golf carts, and for that reason, we decided to raise this age limit to reduce the likelihood of another accident."

The incident that prompted the policy change involved two young men who drove a club golf cart into a ditch. While no one was injured, the cart sustained considerable damage. Agnar mentioned that the individuals involved felt remorse, emphasizing that the issue was a lapse in judgment. "They weren't careful, and that's precisely the point. When you're young, you forget yourself, and consequently, we raised the age limit to reduce the chances of something like this happening again. They are good kids, and it just happened."

To rent a golf cart, individuals will now need to present a driver's license through island.is and sign a declaration of responsibility. This measure aims to ensure greater accountability and reduce the risk of future incidents, prioritizing safety on the golf course.
