Whitney Houston honored with new Barbie doll

A new Barbie doll celebrates the enduring legacy of music icon Whitney Houston. The doll, part of the "Barbie Signature Series" that has previously honored artists like David Bowie and Diana Ross, captures Houston's vibrant image from her 1987 hit "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)."

Clad in a pink midi dress, colorful earrings, and white and blue heels, the doll sports the singer's signature 1980s hairstyle. Its release on August 9, marking what would have been Houston's birthday, comes nearly four decades after the song's debut. Nathan Baynard, vice president and global head of Barbie at Mattel, stated that Houston's music has provided a soundtrack for many life moments worldwide. He expressed pride in honoring her legacy, noting the doll reflects her "unique style, joy, and spirit."

The doll's unveiling took place during the 5th annual "Whitney Houston Legacy of Love" event. This gathering aims to raise money for the late singer's foundation, which supports aspiring young individuals. The "Barbie Signature Series" has previously paid tribute to numerous musical talents, including Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Kylie Minogue, Stevie Nicks, and Gloria Estefan. Houston, who signed a record deal as a teenager, became one of the best-selling music artists in history, known for hits like "How Will I Know" and "Saving All My Love For You," as well as her iconic rendition of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You." She passed away in 2012 at the age of 48.
