Who bids more, Lula or Flávio? The Centrão's 'neutrality' comes at a high price

The upcoming 2026 elections are marked by the enigmatic alliance between President Lula and Senator Ciro Nogueira, a pivotal figure who has orchestrated a significant shift in political alignments. Nogueira, leading the Progressive Party (PP) and the broader "Centrão" bloc, has withdrawn support for Flávio Bolsonaro's presidential bid, declaring "neutrality" instead. This strategic maneuver, following a reported reconciliation between Nogueira and Lula, has reshaped the electoral landscape.

Nogueira, a senator from Piauí, boasts a complex political trajectory, having previously supported a succession of presidents including FHC, Lula, Dilma, and Temer. He even served as Chief of Staff under Jair Bolsonaro, who referred to the position as the "heart" of his government. Despite being implicated in various scandals, from Lava Jato to the Banco Master case, Nogueira has faced no convictions, with records showing seven corruption schemes, five inquiries, and four formal charges.

His sudden silence towards Lula, after being one of the president's harshest critics during the first three years of his current term, has raised eyebrows. While political convenience in Piauí, where Nogueira is seeking re-election to the Senate, is cited, the "reunion" between Lula and Nogueira is seen as more than just pragmatic. Reports suggest that Nogueira received R$6 million from an associate, Daniel Vorcaro, through luxury trips and "allowances," alongside potential political exchanges with Lula.

Nogueira's influence was starkly demonstrated when he decisively prevented Senator Tereza Cristina from becoming Flávio Bolsonaro's running mate. This swift decision, bypassing party executive meetings, removed a key asset for Bolsonaro and a potential "specter" for Lula. Cristina, a respected figure in the agribusiness sector and former Minister of Agriculture, was a "dream candidate" for Bolsonaro and is reportedly aiming to become the first female president of the Senate.
