WHO earthquake warning for Central Asia is about preparedness, not prediction, say seismologists

A recent statement from the World Health Organization (WHO) has prompted clarification from seismologists regarding earthquake preparedness in Central Asia. The WHO's call for strengthening preparations for strong earthquakes does not signal an imminent seismic event in Kyrgyzstan, according to Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov, a seismologist at the Institute of Seismology.

Abdrakhmatov explained that the institute currently possesses no scientific data to support the conclusion that a powerful earthquake is expected in the near future. He emphasized that the WHO's statement should be interpreted as an urgent appeal to enhance the readiness of medical facilities and emergency services for potential disasters, rather than a specific forecast.

"The main goal is to save lives, provide timely assistance to victims, and minimize the potential consequences of natural disasters," Abdrakhmatov stated. He highlighted the critical need for Kyrgyzstan to prioritize emergency prevention, including regular drills, public awareness campaigns, and safety education for schoolchildren. The seismologist noted that while areas like the Alai Valley, Osh, Jalal-Abad regions, and the Issyk-Kul basin are known seismic zones, accurately predicting the time and location of future earthquakes remains impossible. He urged citizens to remain calm, follow safety rules, and rely solely on official information.
