WHO: Ebola outbreak in DR Congo is the country's largest ever

The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with its most severe Ebola outbreak on record, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed in a recent update. The epidemic continues to spread, posing a significant and growing health crisis for the nation.

As of July 30, the outbreak has resulted in 3,605 confirmed cases and tragically, 1,587 deaths. This brings the overall fatality rate to a concerning 44 percent, underscoring the virulence of the virus.

The WHO highlighted that the escalating number of infections, the expanding geographical reach of the virus, and the high death toll collectively signal an intensifying public health emergency. The specific variant identified is the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments.
