Why I appointed Omenugha as COOU Vice-Chancellor — Soludo

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has publicly justified his appointment of Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha as the fifth substantive Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU). Speaking at a thanksgiving Mass marking Omenugha’s first anniversary in office and her husband's 70th birthday, Soludo stated that merit, extensive experience, and proven leadership capabilities were the primary drivers behind the decision.

Governor Soludo highlighted Prof. Omenugha's distinguished record in the education sector, particularly her firm stance against examination malpractice during her tenure as Anambra State Commissioner for Education. He recalled her decisive action in shutting down over 486 "miracle centres" notorious for cheating, describing this move as a testament to her courage, integrity, and dedication to educational excellence. Soludo believes Omenugha embodies the leadership qualities necessary to advance his administration's vision for transforming Anambra into a smart, digital, livable, and prosperous state by 2070.

The governor also revealed that he faced considerable pressure from influential individuals advocating for other candidates from within the university's professorial ranks. However, he resisted this lobbying, prioritizing what he described as the selection of the most qualified individual for the role. "I refused to succumb to pressure because the interest of the university and the state was paramount," Soludo asserted, reaffirming that merit remains the cornerstone of appointments under his leadership.

The thanksgiving service and birthday celebration were attended by a diverse group of dignitaries, including government officials, political associates, academics, members of the clergy, and family members, underscoring the significance of the occasion and the support for both Prof. Omenugha and Governor Soludo's administration.
