With march, they demand justice for Cecilia Viviana, merchant murdered in Chiapas; two men attacked her in her business in the Central de Abastos

A somber march filled the streets of Comitán, Chiapas, as merchants, family members, friends, and feminist organizations united to demand justice for Cecilia Viviana López. The 22-year-old vendor was fatally shot on July 22 while working at her chicken stall in the Central de Abastos market.

López, originally from the community of Los Riegos, was attacked around 5 p.m. by two men arriving on a motorcycle. While the assailants reportedly intended to shoot Daniel López, 30, Cecilia Viviana was struck by two gunshots. The attackers fled the scene immediately. Emergency services transported her to the regional hospital, but she succumbed to her severe injuries on July 26, having sustained six gunshot wounds.

Following the attack, merchants at the market placed banners calling for justice, transparency, and an end to violence and impunity. Slogans included "We demand transparent and unimpeded investigation," "Security and peace in our workplace," and "No more violence."

The march, coinciding with the start of the Comitán fair, began in the Miguel Alemán neighborhood and covered more than three kilometers, concluding in the central park. Participants carried signs with messages such as "We want justice for Viviana," "May her voice not be silenced," and "Justice for Ceci." They briefly stopped at the District Prosecutor's Office, urging the Chiapas Attorney General to investigate Viviana's murder. Cartulinas demanding justice were affixed to the building's walls, but no state government or prosecutor's office officials approached the demonstrators.

As of the report, no arrests have been made in connection with Cecilia Viviana López's homicide, leaving the community frustrated and seeking accountability.
