Wife Accuses Husband of Years of Domestic Violence, Infidelity in Explosive Divorce Battle

A Nigerian lawyer practicing in the United States has initiated divorce proceedings in the Lagos High Court, accusing her husband of a pattern of domestic violence, emotional abuse, infidelity, and financial manipulation spanning years. Mrs. Nnedimma Onyegbula claims she was the primary financial provider throughout their marriage.

Wale Igbintade A Nigerian lawyer based in the United States, Mrs. Nnedimma Onyegbula, has asked the High Court of Lagos State to dissolve her decades-long marriage, accusing her husband, Sonny Onyegbula, of years of domestic violence, emotional abuse, infidelity, financial manipulation and intimidation.

In her filing, Mrs. Onyegbula detailed alleged physical assaults, including instances where her husband allegedly choked her and lifted her off the ground despite her diagnosed Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. She cited a specific incident in October 2012, where she claims he assaulted her in front of their children, leading to her losing consciousness and requiring treatment at multiple medical facilities. She also alleges an assault by her husband's sister-in-law while she was recovering from hip replacement surgery, an incident she claims occurred in the presence of her husband and other relatives who did not intervene.

In a reply filed in the ongoing divorce proceedings, Mrs. Onyegbula also claimed she was the family’s primary breadwinner throughout the marriage.

Beyond physical abuse, Mrs. Onyegbula accuses her husband of sustained emotional abuse, including withholding affection, unexplained absences from the home, body-shaming, and portraying her as perpetually ill and financially dependent while taking credit for her contributions. She reserves the right to pursue separate civil action for the alleged assaults.

Mr. Onyegbula has denied all the allegations.

Mr. Sonny Onyegbula has denied all allegations made against him. In his response, he accused his wife of becoming violent during disagreements, citing incidents where she allegedly smashed television sets, grabbed him by the neck, and physically attacked him. Mrs. Onyegbula dismissed these counter-allegations as fabricated, arguing her medical conditions would make such actions impossible and that their son's account contradicted her husband's claims.

She alleged that the respondent repeatedly grabbed her by the neck, choked her and lifted her off the ground despite knowing she suffers from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Fibromyalgia.
