Wildfire near Lake Garda forces evacuation of over 200 people

A significant wildfire erupted near Italy's Lake Garda, prompting the evacuation of more than 200 people, many of whom were holidaymakers. The fire raged in the mountainous area on the western shore of Italy's largest lake, in the municipality of Tignale.

Firefighters reported that the blaze spread rapidly overnight Friday and into Saturday, fueled by dry conditions from recent weeks. While dozens of tourists in a holiday complex were temporarily moved to safety, and several holiday homes were also cleared, residents and tourists were permitted to return later on Saturday.

Efforts to bring the fire under control were ongoing Saturday morning, with firefighters focusing on containing the fire front and protecting nearby homes. The region, a popular tourist destination for Germans and other international visitors during the summer, is characterized by dry pine forests that are prone to rapid fire spread and difficult to combat.

Local authorities noted that the extreme dryness had created fertile ground for the flames. Italy has been enduring a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas. While other regions have also seen wildfires, the scale has not matched that seen in France, Spain, and Greece. The heatwave is expected to persist for several more days.
