Wildfire nightmare in West Attica: Battle to save settlements as flames engulf Holy Skepas

A devastating wildfire, which began in Boeotia, Greece, is now in its fourth day and has spread to West Attica, posing a severe threat to numerous settlements. Firefighting crews are engaged in an intense, round-the-clock battle to control the blaze, which has already caused extensive damage to the dense vegetation of Porto Germeno and destroyed multiple homes.

The fire is currently encircling the areas of Krio Pigadi, Agia Paraskevi, and Agios Nektarios near Vilia, with efforts focused on protecting these communities and the Holy Monastery of Skepas. Residents are increasingly concerned as the fire edges closer to the towns of Megara and Mandra. Consecutive alerts from the 112 emergency service have called for the evacuation of several western Attica regions.

Strong, gale-force winds are significantly complicating the firefighting operations. The fire has developed into two main fronts: one near Agia Paraskevi, where firefighters are working in Krio Pigadi, and another moving towards the Megara area, specifically the Kandili firing range. The situation remains particularly difficult in Luba, outside Vilia, where homes have been destroyed.

Intensified efforts are now concentrated in the Kandili area, with the participation of the Fire Service and the Hellenic Police. Authorities are working to safely evacuate residents as the fire has reached the settlement of Agia Skepis, with flames reportedly close to houses. Firefighting helicopters began operations at first light, offering a glimmer of hope.

Earlier, an emergency message from 112 urged residents of Kandili, Agia Skepis, and the Bosika area to evacuate immediately towards Nea Peramos. Behind these areas lie the foothills of Mount Pateras, where a highly active fire front continues to burn. Firefighters are closely monitoring the situation, while police patrol with lights and sirens, urging any remaining residents in scattered homes to leave. Heavy machinery, including bulldozers, are creating firebreaks to help contain the spread.
