Wildfires Force Thousands to Evacuate Bordeaux Suburbs as Blazes Spread

Thousands of residents are fleeing their homes as wildfires rage on the outskirts of Bordeaux, France. Evacuations are underway in the suburbs of Le Haillan, Eysines, and Merignac, according to Sophie Brocas, head of the local administration for Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Gironde. This expansion of the evacuation zone follows the movement of flames towards the Bordeaux metropolitan area due to a change in wind direction.

In the wider Gironde department, at least 110,000 people have already been safely relocated. In the neighboring Landes department, an additional 31,000 individuals have been forced to leave their residences because of the fires. The authorities describe the situation as a fire of "unprecedented scale," with over 1,200 firefighters deployed to combat the blazes.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated on X that the fires "have reached an unprecedented scale." The French army has been mobilized to provide support. So far, the fires have devastated 22,000 hectares, an area roughly 63 times the size of New York's Central Park. The fires, which began near the Étang de Lacanau, a lake inland from the coast, are being fought with significant resources, but the shifting winds continue to pose a major challenge.
