Exceptional heatwaves across Europe since spring continue to fuel devastating wildfires, with several countries battling blazes this weekend. The continent faces a critical situation as temperatures remain extreme.

In Spain, a fire that began Monday in the Aragón region has forced the evacuation of over 1,000 people from 18 towns and is impacting more than 15,000 hectares. Regional authorities reported that over 600 firefighters are working to contain the flames, particularly to prevent them from reaching urban areas and to protect historic monasteries. Meanwhile, in Andalucía, a fire that has raged for eight days in Huelva province, destroying pine and eucalyptus forests and displacing over 600 residents, shows signs of improvement. Emergency officials stated that the fire had not advanced overnight, marking a potential turning point, though over 1,000 firefighters continue to work in the affected area, which spans a perimeter exceeding 25,000 hectares.

France is grappling with a renewed wildfire in the Landes region of the southwest. The blaze reignited at dawn, burning 1,580 hectares. While meteorological conditions are expected to improve with less extreme temperatures and potential rain, the fire caused about a hundred new evacuations, bringing the total to 650 people. No homes have been affected, but the fire's advance slowed compared to the previous night.

Greece remains on high alert, with firefighters monitoring numerous regions due to high fire risk exacerbated by strong winds. Over fifty wildfires have been reported in the past 24 hours, most of which were quickly controlled. However, significant fires affected the Finikas area in Crete and the island of Kos on Friday, requiring substantial resources. In Belgium, a large wildfire consumed at least 1,650 hectares in a nature park in the eastern part of the country.
