Wildfires rage in France and Spain, forcing thousands to evacuate

Wildfires continue to scorch France and Spain, prompting mass evacuations and significant destruction. In southwestern France, particularly in the Landes and Gironde departments near Bordeaux, over 197,000 people have been evacuated. The French government has deployed an additional 500 soldiers, bringing the total to 1,500, to aid in protecting residents and property. A total of 980 square kilometers have burned, an area described by French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez as a "historical record." The severity of the fires has led organizers to shorten the final stage of the Tour de France cycling race. President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to rebuild the affected areas, assuring residents of continued support.

Meanwhile, Spain is also battling significant blazes, with nearly 60,000 people evacuated across the country. In the province of Ávila, northwest of Madrid, 30,000 residents were forced to leave their homes. Another 29,500 were evacuated in the region surrounding the capital. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the town of Cenicientos, warning of the complex firefighting efforts ahead due to weather conditions. He emphasized that saving lives and protecting populated areas is the top priority. The fires west of Madrid have consumed over 25,000 hectares, an area more than double the size of Paris.

While both countries are experiencing severe fire events, there have been no reported fatalities directly linked to the large-scale wildfires. A separate fire incident in Manises, near Valencia, resulted in one death, but it is not connected to the major blazes.
