Wildfires rage in France: Emergency meeting convenes as authorities vow to save Bordeaux

France is grappling with intense wildfires, with the southwestern regions of Gironde and Landes bearing the brunt of the devastation. In response, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an emergency inter-ministerial crisis management meeting late Tuesday to coordinate the response. The meeting included ministers of the Interior, Armed Forces, Health, Transport, and Environment, aiming to harmonize actions to combat the fires and protect affected areas. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez assured that authorities "will do everything to protect" Bordeaux, as the fire, which has already consumed 14,000 hectares, advances towards the city. While the metropolis is not currently under direct threat, Nuñez stressed that all necessary measures, including ground forces and military assistance, would be deployed to safeguard it. So far, authorities have evacuated 110,000 residents from their homes. The prosecutor's office in Bordeaux has initiated criminal proceedings against two men arrested for smoking in a forest in the Gironde region, where the major fires erupted. These actions underscore the determination to prosecute any reckless behavior that could spark new blazes. Tragically, two firefighters lost their lives while battling a fire in Mériignac, near Bordeaux. Prosecutor Renaud Godel warned of severe penalties for anyone starting fires in forests or discarding lit cigarette butts. A 29-year-old man was arrested for smoking in the forest of Lège-Cap-Ferret and faces prosecution, while a 26-year-old was apprehended in Lacanau for smoking and barbecuing in a forest, also facing legal consequences. Fire-related activities are banned in the Landres, Gironde, and Lot-et-Garonne regions, with violators facing up to one year in prison and a €15,000 fine for endangering others. The fire, which began Wednesday afternoon, continues to ravage the Arcachon basin, having already destroyed 14,000 hectares. The prosecutor confirmed the fire originated from a grass-cutting machine used by company workers clearing an area near a high-voltage line. The use of the machine was permitted at the time, as a ban on "all forest work using thermal engines" was implemented only a few hours later.
