Wildfires Rage on Mount Semeru, Engulfing Seven Points

Firefighters and joint forces are engaged in a fierce battle against wildfires consuming Mount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia. The blazes have spread across seven distinct points within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, presenting a significant challenge to containment efforts.

According to Yudhi Cahyono, Head of Emergency and Logistics for the Lumajang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the fire hotspots are located in Ledok Bedor, Blok Jantur, Blok Ranukembang, Ayak ayak, Watu Rejeng, Ranu Kumbolo, and Puncak Trisula.

To bolster suppression efforts, two helicopters from the East Java BPBD have been deployed for water bombing, targeting areas difficult to access by land. Ground teams are also working manually, creating firebreaks and utilizing available equipment to control the spread. The challenging, hilly terrain of the region necessitates a combined aerial and ground approach.

Agus Kusuma Negara, Head of Section III of the TNBTS Resort, noted that two areas, Ayak-Ayak and Bangunan Cilik, are experiencing massive fires. The use of water bombing is crucial for these inaccessible locations. While aerial support is vital, ground crews continue manual suppression and monitoring to prevent reignition.

Initial estimates suggest the fires have impacted approximately 160 hectares, primarily burning dry vegetation. The operation involves TNBTS personnel, Lumajang BPBD, volunteers, local communities, and support from the East Java BPBD, ensuring a coordinated response.
