Winnipeg Blue Bombers inducting 2 Grey Cup-winning teams for 2026 hall of fame class

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are set to honor two of their most successful teams by inducting the 1988 and 1990 Grey Cup championship squads into the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class. This marks a unique occasion, as the club is recognizing entire teams rather than individual players or personnel.

Both legendary teams shared the same leadership, guided by head coach Mike Riley and general manager Cal Murphy. Their induction places them alongside the 1984 championship team in the club's Hall of Fame. Wade Miller, President & CEO of the Winnipeg Football Club, expressed excitement about adding these championship squads, highlighting their success in winning two titles within a three-year span.

"We are thrilled to add two more Grey Cup championship teams to the Winnipeg Football Club’s Hall of Fame," Miller stated in a media release. "The ’88 and ’90 teams won two championships in three years and were led by two icons in franchise history in GM Cal Murphy and head coach Mike Riley and featured some of the greatest legends to ever wear a Blue Bomber uniform."

The 1988 Bombers achieved a historic feat by becoming the first team with a .500 regular-season record (9-9) to win the Grey Cup. Key plays included receiver James Murphy's 165 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Michael Gray's game-sealing interception. The 1990 team secured the club's 10th championship, their third Grey Cup in seven seasons, defeating Edmonton. Tom Burgess and Greg Battle were named offensive and defensive MVPs, respectively, while Warren Hudson was the top Canadian player.

Both teams will be formally recognized during the Blue Bombers' home game against the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, September 25th. The official Hall of Fame Celebration event is scheduled for the following night at the RBC Convention Centre. Miller extended congratulations to all who played critical roles on these championship teams, acknowledging their rightful place in the club's history.
