Wisconsin Protesters Demand Justice for Man Shot Dead by Police

Protesters filled Madison, Wisconsin, on Thursday demanding accountability after a police officer fatally shot Corey Ruiz, a Black man, the previous day. The incident, captured on video by bystanders, has fueled outrage and drawn comparisons to the 2020 killing of George Floyd, reigniting national discussions on police brutality and racial bias in law enforcement.

During a tense confrontation, officers attempted to subdue Ruiz, who police say was armed with a knife that injured at least one of the four officers involved. Video footage shows a struggle before an officer fired what appeared to be three shots at close range. Demonstrators gathered at the scene and the Capitol, where an outdoor concert was canceled due to the protests, placing flowers in the street and introducing Ruiz's relatives, including his daughter, to the crowd.

Earlier on Thursday, protesters disrupted a press conference held by Madison Police Chief John Patterson, calling for the officers' arrest. Signs held by demonstrators included messages like "Corrupt cops deserve to die, too!!!" Patterson stated that police initially stopped Ruiz based on reports of someone looking into parked cars, with another call about an unlawful entry potentially increasing police presence. He confirmed that the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent homicide investigation.

According to Patterson, officers used a Taser in an attempt to subdue Ruiz, but it was unsuccessful for reasons yet unknown. The incident has once again brought to the forefront the complex and often fraught relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve, particularly in cases involving Black individuals and the use of deadly force.
