Women and the Double Discourse

In Egypt, we grapple with a deeply ingrained societal paradox concerning women. On one hand, we witness commendable efforts to uplift and empower women, recognizing their vital contributions to society, family, and nation. These are the women we see celebrated on television – leaders, professionals, and achievers who defy limitations.

Yet, a parallel and opposing current seeks to confine women to archaic roles, often cloaked in religious rhetoric. This regressive narrative, amplified by certain media programs and social media 'experts,' reduces women to mere objects of desire or subservient figures, even from a very young age. This content, unfortunately, finds a receptive audience among those raised to view women as secondary.

The result is a damaging duality: a society that simultaneously champions female empowerment and perpetuates misogyny. This "schizophrenic" discourse, as we see it, creates a confusing and harmful environment. It forces us to confront a fundamental question: Do we truly see women as complete, capable human beings, or are we still trapped by outdated perceptions?

At Al-Masry Al-Youm, we believe in fostering a consistent and respectful dialogue. This means acknowledging the full humanity of women and rejecting the contradictory messages that undermine their progress and dignity. It's time to move beyond this double standard and establish a clear, unified understanding of women's rights and roles in our society.
