Women sustainability group applauds govt over Achimota Forest restoration

The Association of Women in Sustainability Professionals (AWSP) has lauded the Ghanaian government's decision to restore Achimota Forest to its original state, following the revocation of Executive Instrument (E.I.) 234. AWSP views this move as a significant step toward bolstering environmental protection and preserving the nation's ecological systems.

In a statement released in Accra, the association emphasized that the true value of Achimota Forest lies not in direct economic gains but in the critical ecological services it provides to the capital city. As Accra's largest remaining urban forest, it serves as a vital habitat for over 200 plant and 150 bird species. Furthermore, it plays a crucial role in improving air quality and acting as an ecological buffer against the impacts of climate change.

The AWSP also recognized the forest's importance as a spiritual retreat and a significant cultural heritage site. Its restoration is expected to strengthen Ghana's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The association urged for the forest to be managed as a living ecosystem that enhances Accra's resilience to climate change, heat stress, and pollution.

Highlighting the importance of gender inclusivity, AWSP stressed the need to place women at the forefront of the forest's restoration efforts. Their leadership in sustainability planning, community engagement, and advocacy is deemed indispensable. The association also called for transparent governance, strict enforcement of environmental laws, and the integration of urban-focused strategies that prioritize ecological services. Inclusive tree-planting initiatives and the incorporation of the forest into urban planning were also advocated for, viewing the decision as an opportunity to embed justice, equity, and inclusion into forest governance.
