The jubilant celebrations of Spanish fans after their national team won the 2026 World Cup final were so intense that they registered as seismic activity. Scientists reported that seismometers across Spain detected vibrations caused by the explosions of joy following Ferran Torres's decisive goal, which secured the country's second world title.

Researchers from the Geosciences Center of Barcelona analyzed data from the National Geographic Institute and the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia. Their findings revealed unusual signals linked to fan celebrations in cities including Algeciras, Barcelona, Cadiz, and Granada. The sensors recorded three distinct peaks of activity during the match: after Torres's goal, after another goal that was later disallowed by VAR, and the strongest vibration after the final whistle.

Scientists explained these movements as a form of "induced seismicity," human-caused vibrations resulting from thousands of supporters jumping, shouting, and celebrating simultaneously. Comparable seismic vibrations were previously recorded during Spain's Euro 2024 final victory against England, when goals by Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal triggered measurable ground movements in Madrid and Barcelona.
