WTT Grand Smash: Peng Yu-han reaches quarterfinals, eyes top 30 ranking

Eighteen-year-old Peng Yu-han has achieved a significant milestone in her table tennis career, advancing to the quarterfinals of the WTT Grand Smash tournament in Europe. This achievement marks her second Grand Smash appearance and guarantees her a career-high world ranking, projected to break into the top 30.

Peng's path to the quarterfinals included a notable upset over Japan's Miyu Kashiwagi, a bronze medalist at the 2023 World Championships. The young Taiwanese player secured a 3-1 victory, demonstrating resilience and strategic play. She is now the second Taiwanese player, after Cheng I-ching, to reach the singles quarterfinals of a WTT Grand Smash event.

Reflecting on her performance, particularly her win against Kashiwagi, known as the "particle killer" for her ability to handle various grips, Peng emphasized the importance of executing her training. "The most important thing is to try to play what I practiced, handle the serve and receive well, and take the initiative in the first three shots," she explained. This proactive strategy aimed to prevent opponents from settling into their preferred rhythm.

Peng highlighted the crucial role of maintaining composure during high-pressure moments. "There were some very close and stressful times during the match," she admitted. "I think the most crucial thing is that I could stay calm on these important points, not letting the gain or loss of one or two points affect the rest of the match. Focusing on playing each point well. I am very happy to win in the end; my execution in the match has also improved."

With this strong showing, Peng is set to earn substantial ranking points, potentially surpassing the world's top 40 and securing automatic qualification for next year's national team. This was a prospect she hadn't fully anticipated, having prepared for the national team selection trials. "If I get a direct spot, I will be very happy! I really didn't expect to break through so much before the competition," she said.
