Wukuf Sermon at Arafat: Upholding Trusts and Islamic Principles

Delivered during the pivotal Wukuf at Arafat, a cornerstone of the Hajj pilgrimage, KH Cholil Nafis's sermon served as a profound reminder of core Islamic teachings and the responsibilities of believers. The address, steeped in tradition and spiritual significance, urged attendees to uphold trusts and adhere to divine guidance.

"Oh people, your blood and your property are sacred to you until you meet your Lord, like the sanctity of this day, this month, and this city," Nafis declared, echoing the Prophet Muhammad's final sermon. He stressed the importance of returning trusts to their rightful owners and explicitly renounced the pre-Islamic practices of usury and blood feuds, citing the abolition of interest and the setting aside of ancient blood claims as foundational to Islamic justice.

The sermon also addressed the subtle ways Satan can lead people astray, warning against complacency and urging vigilance against actions, however small, that might displease God. It reaffirmed the divine order of twelve months in a year, four of which are sacred, and underscored the reciprocal rights and duties between husbands and wives. "Your wives have rights over you, and you have rights over them," Nafis stated, emphasizing mutual respect and proper conduct within marriage.

Furthermore, the address powerfully conveyed the message of Islamic egalitarianism. "Your Lord is One, and your father is One. All of you are from Adam, and Adam is from dust. The most noble among you in the sight of God is the most pious of you," he proclaimed, rejecting any notion of racial or ethnic superiority. The sermon concluded by reminding the faithful that they have left behind two guiding principles, the Quran and the Sunnah, which will prevent them from going astray if they adhere to them, urging them to return to God and His teachings.
