Xinfeng Coast Maintenance No Longer Fragmented; Three Units Sign MOU to Integrate Responsibilities

Xinfeng Township, home to the longest coastline in Hsinchu County at approximately 7 kilometers, is set to improve its coastal environment quality through a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The township office, along with the Second River Management Office of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Hsinchu Forest District Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, signed the agreement to consolidate coastal maintenance duties.

Previously, responsibilities for maintaining the coastline, which spans from the mangrove ecological area and Guanhai Boulevard to the Fengkeng Seawall and the border with Xinwu and Zhubei, were fragmented. The township office handled the area around Guanhai Boulevard, while local groups like the Xinfeng Township Water Environment Protection Association and community volunteers managed other sections.

Through the integration of responsibilities among the three parties, Xinfeng Township's coastal management can become more efficient.

The new MOU establishes a "central government provides resources, local government implements management" model. Central agencies will oversee general seawall and forest land base maintenance, while the local township office will lead surrounding development and environmental upkeep. This integration is expected to streamline administrative processes, particularly for urgent issues like removing fallen trees, which previously required inter-agency assessments. The township office can now directly address such hazards, improving safety for visitors and the overall environment.

Xinfeng Township Mayor Xu Wei-chieh highlighted that this collaboration is a milestone for sustainable coastal development. Future efforts will focus on improving coastal facilities, engaging local communities in maintenance, establishing regular communication channels between the three parties, and deepening ecological education. The partnership aims to boost coastal tourism and ensure the long-term health of the Xinfeng coastline.
