Xizhi’s Baipao Lake Ecology Park Set to Begin Construction in September, Could Open by Mid-2029

Baipao Lake in New Taipei’s Xizhi District is set to become a new destination for recreation and environmental education, with construction of an ecology park scheduled to begin in September.

The New Taipei City government plans to invest NT$330 million in the project, which will include a resource-recycling center, landscaped trails, a lakeside viewing platform, ecological experience facilities and a base for water activities. Construction is expected to finish in 2028.

City Councilor Bai Peiru asked Mayor Hou You-yi and Public Works Bureau Director Feng Zhaolin about the timetable and how the project would be funded. Hou and Feng said the city government would cover the full NT$330 million cost. Central government plans to build public housing at the site have been abandoned.

Bai said Baipao Lake’s natural resources could not be replicated. She urged the city to incorporate environmental education and water-sports programs for nearby schools, describing the area as a valuable natural classroom for local students.

Officials said the design already reserves space for ecological features. The Sports Bureau is also working on water-activity plans, including canoeing facilities linked to athlete training and coaching. The city intends to bring in a professional team to operate the park in early 2029, allowing it to open as soon as the first half of that year.
