Yilan 228 Memorial Site Faces Opposition to New Pickleball Court

A plan by the Yilan County Government to construct a pickleball court just 2.5 meters from the "Mirror of History" 228 Memorial has ignited fierce opposition from the 228 Survivors Family Care Association. The association's chairman, Chang Wen-yi, voiced strong objections, stating the court's proximity will inevitably shatter the quiet, comfortable, and solemn atmosphere befitting a historical monument.

"The 228 Incident claimed the lives of dozens of Yilan's esteemed figures," Chang explained. "It was hard-won to establish this memorial for families and the public to remember and reflect. It's also an important historical education site for Yilan, which should remain tranquil, solemn, and dignified to honor and respect the sacrifices made." He expressed deep concern, recounting how an elderly survivor wept upon hearing the news, lamenting that the site of remembrance for those who died for Taiwan would now be disturbed by constant noise and potential damage.

Chang accused the county government of disrespect and a "digging deeper into soft soil" approach, claiming they failed to consult the association and only sent design drafts. He emphasized the enduring presence of 228 advocacy groups and urged the government to reconsider its decision.

The county's Education Department countered that multiple explanatory meetings and consultations with the association chairman had occurred, with no significant objections initially raised. The department highlighted that Yilan Sports Park is designated for sports facilities and expressed hope for harmonious coexistence, suggesting the pickleball court could serve multiple purposes, including future memorial events and performances.
