Yonsei University to Provide Living-Expense Scholarships for Students Hit by Flooding in Geoje and Tongyeong

Yonsei University will provide one-time living-expense scholarships to undergraduate students facing financial hardship after unusually heavy rain damaged parts of Geoje and Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang Province.

The university said it created the disaster scholarships to ease the financial burden on students who suffered personal or property damage and help them continue their studies. The program covers students affected by flooding in Geoje and in Sanyang-eup and Bongpyeong-dong in Tongyeong, all areas designated as special disaster zones. Students taking additional semesters may also apply.

We arranged practical support so that students facing major difficulties in their daily lives and livelihoods because of the sudden heavy rain do not have trouble continuing their studies.

Applications will be accepted from Sept. 7 through Oct. 13, 2026. Applicants must submit a scholarship application, a family relations certificate and a damage confirmation issued by a local government, following the instructions posted on Yonsei’s website. If other areas receive special disaster-zone status, the university said it may expand eligibility.

Yonsei President Yoon Dong-seop said the university had arranged practical assistance so students struggling with the sudden floods would not face additional difficulty continuing their education. He said Yonsei would closely monitor students’ circumstances and work to deliver needed support promptly.
