Maintaining a clean washing machine is crucial not only for the appliance's longevity but also for ensuring clothes come out truly clean. Neglecting regular cleaning allows dust, dirt, and detergent residue to accumulate in often-unseen areas, potentially leading to unpleasant odors, mold, bacteria growth, and diminished washing performance.

Experts from the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab emphasize that washing machines should be cleaned at least once a month. Carolyn Forté, former executive director of the home care and cleaning lab, highlights that skipping this maintenance increases the risk of bacterial and mold development, as well as persistent odors. Key areas requiring attention include the drum, the detergent dispenser drawer, and the rubber door seals, especially in front-loading models.

For machines equipped with a self-cleaning program, following the manufacturer's instructions is sufficient. For models without this feature, running an empty hot water cycle with a specialized washing machine cleaner or a small amount of bleach is recommended. An additional rinse cycle afterward helps remove any cleaning agent residue. The detergent drawer, in particular, can harbor buildup from powders and softeners, which can transfer to clothes and reduce cleaning efficiency.

Specialists advise against using alcohol vinegar for cleaning, as it may not effectively eliminate bacteria and could damage rubber seals and hoses over time. While baking soda can help neutralize odors, it is not sufficient for thorough cleaning or disinfection. Keeping the machine's door slightly ajar after use allows moisture to escape, preventing the damp environment where bacteria and mold thrive. Wiping down exterior surfaces and the control panel periodically also contributes to overall maintenance.
