Zelensky receives American pit bull terrier as gift

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky welcomed a new, furry companion to his office in Kyiv: a reddish-yellow American pit bull terrier named Freya. The puppy was a gift from former American professional boxer Terrence Crawford during a meeting in Kyiv.

The puppy's name, Freya, carries symbolic weight, as it is named after a Ukrainian project focused on anti-ballistic missile defense. Zelensky appeared visibly delighted, seen cuddling and rocking the three-month-old pup in a video shared after the meeting. This gesture highlights the ongoing visual battle of imagery accompanying Ukraine's fight against the Russian invasion.

Crawford, a longtime supporter of Ukraine and an admirer of American pit bull terriers, presented the puppy with a significant backstory. Freya's grandfather reportedly survived the devastating Russian siege of Bucha in 2022, adding a layer of symbolic meaning to the gift beyond mere photo opportunities.

Animals have emerged as potent symbols of Ukraine's endurance throughout the four-year war. The story of Patron, a Jack Russell terrier recognized for assisting in mine clearance and becoming a mascot for emergency services, was also mentioned. Patron received a state medal from Zelensky and was honored by UNICEF as a "patron of goodwill."
