Zelenskyy presides over reburial of nationalist leader Andriy Melnyk in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy led the state's top officials in reburying the remains of Andriy Melnyk, a former leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). Melnyk's remains were moved from Luxembourg to Kyiv's cemetery for fallen Ukrainian soldiers.

"Colonel Andriy Melnyk has returned to a different Ukraine, not the one he was forced to leave, but the one he dreamed of," Zelenskyy stated on social media. Melnyk became leader of the OUN in 1938. During World War II, his faction of the OUN is remembered for its fight against Soviet domination. However, his legacy is complex, marked by collaboration with Nazi Germany in certain war phases, though he was later imprisoned by the Germans for insisting on Ukrainian statehood.

Supporters argue Melnyk's collaboration was a tactical necessity for Ukrainian independence. Critics, however, point to ideological similarities with Nazism and hold him responsible for some wartime massacres of Jews and Poles by Ukrainian nationalists. Melnyk had previously fought against Russian, communist, and Tsarist forces in the early 20th century.

Melnyk and his wife Sofia were buried in Kyiv, having previously been interred in Luxembourg since his death in exile in 1964. Zelenskyy's administration plans to repatriate the remains of other Ukrainian figures who died abroad. This initiative could face criticism from Holocaust remembrance organizations and strained relations with Poland, which has voiced concerns over the glorification of individuals involved in the deaths of Polish civilians during WWII.
