Zelenskyy suggests reduced Western aid aims to pressure Kyiv for peace talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced suspicion that the recent reduction in Western military aid, specifically anti-aircraft missiles, may be a calculated move to pressure Kyiv into peace negotiations with Russia. Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine has received three times fewer anti-ballistic missiles in 2026 than in prior periods, significantly complicating its ability to defend against Russian assaults.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council, Zelenskyy cited the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East as the official reason provided by allies, primarily the United States and European partners, for the decreased supply. However, he suggested a political dimension, stating, "Perhaps these are political measures to make Ukraine more compliant. In my opinion, there is some truth to that."

Zelenskyy has instructed the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs to intensify efforts to convince allies to provide more air defense ammunition. This call comes in the wake of recent Russian attacks where Ukrainian air defenses struggled to intercept incoming missiles. On Saturday, only one out of 27 ballistic missiles launched by Russia was shot down, resulting in nine deaths in Kyiv. A subsequent attack on Wednesday saw 17 deaths, with none of the 24 ballistic missiles employed being intercepted.

In recent days, Zelenskyy has repeatedly appealed to allies for air defense munitions. Last week, he traveled to Washington to discuss with President Donald Trump the potential for Ukraine to manufacture Patriot missile system components domestically.
