Zelenskyy Thanks Resigning UK Labour Leader Starmer for Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy extended his gratitude to Keir Starmer, the outgoing leader of the UK's Labour Party, for his steadfast support of Ukraine. Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, June 22, following a significant electoral setback for his party in local elections.

In a message posted on the platform X, Zelenskyy emphasized the value of their collaboration, stating, "Keir, thank you for all our cooperation, your support, and joint decisions that helped strengthen our Europe and protect our lives." He underscored the UK's position as a global leader and expressed Ukraine's deep appreciation for Britain's role.

Starmer's resignation comes after the Labour Party lost control of the Welsh Parliament and suffered substantial losses, approximately 1,400 seats, in various local government elections held in May. Despite initially taking responsibility for the electoral defeat, Starmer had resisted calls for his resignation. However, mounting pressure from nearly 100 Labour Members of Parliament and subsequently from cabinet members ultimately led to his decision to step down. He will continue to serve as Prime Minister until a new party leader is elected.
