Zelenskyy Thanks U.S. Senate for Approving Sanctions Bill Against Russia and Iran

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the U.S. Senate for passing legislation aimed at strengthening sanctions against Russia and Iran. He emphasized that this action is crucial for increasing pressure on Russia and hastening the end of the ongoing conflict.

"Real and strong pressure from the U.S. and sanctions against Russia are what will help the most," Zelenskyy stated on social media. He believes that each measure of pressure against the aggressor brings diplomacy closer. Zelenskyy also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is resorting to ballistic missiles to prolong the war, and Ukraine is actively seeking ammunition for Patriot batteries to counter these attacks.

The bill's approval in the Senate, with a significant majority of 86 votes in favor and 11 against, concludes over a year and a half of negotiations between Republicans and Democrats. This legislation empowers Washington to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas, as well as on countries that help circumvent existing sanctions on the Russian energy sector.

The next step for the bill is consideration by the House of Representatives. However, its progress there will be postponed as lawmakers are currently away for the August recess.
