Zelenskyy: Ukraine Wants to End the War With Russia and Has Proposals Ready

Ukraine says it is ready to move quickly toward an end to the war with Russia, but insists that any settlement must include security guarantees and preserve the country’s dignity. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the statement before meeting U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys in Kyiv.

“We are ready for talks. Ukraine has always demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate a constructive approach. We want the war to end as soon as possible. Peace is needed. Security guarantees are needed. The peace after the war must be dignified. Our proposals are already prepared,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, arrived in Kyiv for talks with Zelenskyy after visiting Moscow. Axios reported that sanctions against Russia were likely among the subjects discussed during their meeting with Vladimir Putin. Trump had said two days earlier that he sent negotiators to Moscow and Kyiv with a proposal to end the war.

A White House official who requested anonymity said Witkoff and Kushner had discussed “significant plans for the next steps, which will be announced in the coming weeks” with Putin. The official confirmed that they would also take part in the Kyiv talks and said they hoped for “equally productive meetings.” The envoys traveled to Kyiv by train and met Zelenskyy after noon Polish time.

Reuters, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported that national security advisers from Britain, Germany and France were also in Kyiv. The source did not say which talks they might join. In connection with the U.S. envoys’ visit, Putin ordered a three-day halt to attacks on Kyiv through Monday. Zelenskyy said Ukraine would refrain from attacking Moscow during the same period if Russia honored the declaration.
