Zondacrypto case: Media report Roman Ż. brought to Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice

Roman Ż., a former business partner of BitBay founder Sylwester Suszek, was detained in connection with the investigation into cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto and brought to Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office delegation in Katowice, media reported.

Police detained him on Saturday afternoon. Prosecutors said the arrest followed a justified fear that he might flee. At the prosecutor’s direction, officers searched both the place where Roman Ż. was detained and his registered address. They secured valuable items and documents concerning Zondacrypto’s activities.

Prosecutor General’s spokeswoman Anna Adamiak said Roman Ż. would be brought before the Silesian branch of the National Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice for procedural steps, including the presentation of allegations and questioning as a suspect. She said further information would be released after those actions were completed.

Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek and government spokesman Adam Szłapka also announced the detention. The prosecutor’s office did not confirm to PAP that the hooded, handcuffed man seen being brought into the Katowice office on Sunday morning was Roman Ż., although media identified him as such.

The Katowice Regional Prosecutor’s Office opened the Zondacrypto investigation in April over suspected high-value fraud and money laundering. Several thousand criminal complaints have been filed so far. In August, the case was combined with the investigation into the disappearance of Suszek, who went missing in Czeladź on March 10, 2022.
