1,000 inmates at Nuwakot Central Prison safe after flood

Nuwakot Central Prison in Nepal narrowly escaped a major disaster as floodwaters, originating from Tibet and sweeping through several districts, inundated parts of the facility. Around 1,000 inmates and the security personnel guarding them are reported safe after being moved to a secure block.

The prison, situated in Bidur Municipality-3 along the Trishuli River, experienced partial damage due to the torrential rains and subsequent flooding. Floodwaters breached the first floor of the building where inmates are housed. While the main structure of the inmate housing was spared from being swept away, the rising waters caused significant damage to other areas.

According to prison chief Bhesh Bahadur Kunwar, the prison’s administrative building and the Nepal Police security unit building suffered damage. Structures surrounding the prison were also washed away by the powerful currents. Despite the damage, the primary concern for the safety of the inmates and staff was addressed by relocating them to a more secure section of the prison.

The floods have caused widespread devastation in various riverside areas of Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. The successful rescue and safety of the inmates at Nuwakot Central Prison highlight the immediate response and precautionary measures taken by the prison authorities amidst the natural calamity.
