101-year-old woman arrested in Nigeria for allegedly selling cannabis

Authorities in Nigeria's Ogun State have arrested a 101-year-old woman, Esther Ogunmabo, on suspicion of selling cannabis. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended the great-grandmother on Saturday after reportedly finding her in possession of over 90 grams of the drug, packaged in retail sachets.

Ogunmabo allegedly told investigators that she began selling cannabis after a fire destroyed her provisions shop. She claimed to supply the drug to people in her community. Her daughter, who resides in Lagos, is accused of arranging the supply every four days, with Ogunmabo then repackaging and selling it to customers.

Due to her advanced age, the NDLEA chief executive directed that Ogunmabo be granted bail and receive counseling. While her release on bail does not preclude potential criminal charges, her daughter has also been arrested in connection with the case. The NDLEA also announced other drug seizures along Nigeria's maritime routes, including over 42 kilograms of narcotics intercepted on a boat heading to Cameroon and a first-ever seizure of illicit drugs shipped from Thailand.
