11 Killed in Fresh Attack on Plateau Community

The Ngbra Zongo community in Plateau State, Nigeria, is once again plunged into mourning following a brutal attack that claimed at least 11 lives. The coordinated assault, carried out by gunmen in the early hours of Friday, saw residents targeted with gunfire and machetes as attackers moved from house to house. This resurgence of violence has heightened fears among residents, many of whom are uncertain about returning to their homes or farms, especially with the farming season approaching. Mr. Philip Alanga, a community member, recounted the terrifying experience, describing how the attackers "moved from one house to another attacking innocent people." The devastating nature of the attack is underscored by the fact that three of the victims were pregnant women, a detail highlighted by another resident, Mr. Chigoji Rocku. The Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Mr. Danjuma Auta, condemned the incident as "tragic and condemnable," lamenting the recurring violence in Bassa LGA and calling for "justice to be served to deter further violence." The Executive Chairman of Bassa LGA, Mr. Joshua Riti, expressed deep concern over the resurgence of violence, appealing to both Federal and Plateau State Governments to bolster security measures. This latest attack raises serious questions about the effectiveness of existing security arrangements and the long-term safety of rural populations in Plateau State, a region that has experienced repeated violence in recent years.
