115 High-Risk Inmates Transferred to Nusakambangan

Indonesian correctional authorities have relocated 115 high-risk inmates to the maximum-security prison island of Nusakambangan in Cilacap, Central Java. The group comprised 79 individuals from South Sulawesi and 36 from East Java, according to Rika Aprianti, spokesperson for the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjen PAS).

The transfer occurred in stages, beginning on July 17, 2026, when the inmates from South Sulawesi departed from the Class IIB Prison in Maros. They traveled by land to the Soekarno-Hatta Port in Makassar, then by sea to Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, East Java. After a temporary transit at the Class I Surabaya Prison, the 36 inmates from East Java joined the group on July 19, 2026, bringing the total to 115.

These inmates were then transported overland to Nusakambangan under heavy escort. The convoy included 77 personnel from various security units, including the Ditjen PAS Directorate of Security and Intelligence, the National Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob), traffic police, and correctional officers from South Sulawesi and East Java. The group arrived at Wijayapura Port in Cilacap early on July 20, 2026, and proceeded to Nusakambangan, reaching Sodong Port safely by 01:40 WIB.

Rika Aprianti emphasized that the successful operation was a result of strong collaboration, meticulous planning, and coordination. She stated that the relocation is a key component of the Ditjen PAS's policy to create a safer, more orderly, and controlled correctional system. Placing high-risk inmates on Nusakambangan, which has a strategic function as a high-security correctional facility, is intended to optimize security and support more effective rehabilitation processes tailored to each inmate's risk profile.
