13 fatalities confirmed in '2026 Kumamoto Earthquake': Japan PM Takaichi

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced Wednesday that 13 people have died in the magnitude-7.1 Kumamoto earthquake that struck Japan, with search and rescue operations ongoing amid extensive damage.

Regarding the '2026 Kumamoto Earthquake,' as of 10:30 a.m. today, in addition to 13 fatalities (including those under investigation for disaster-related causes), extensive damage has been confirmed, including human injuries, building collapses, fires, and road damage.

As of 10:30 a.m. local time, the earthquake had resulted in 13 fatalities, including cases still under investigation for disaster-related causes. The prime minister reported significant destruction, encompassing human injuries, collapsed buildings, fires, and damaged roadways across the affected region.

"We extend our deepest condolences to those who have passed away, and we solemnly offer our sympathies to their bereaved families. We also extend our heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by the disaster," Takaichi stated. She emphasized the government's commitment to mobilizing all available resources to save as many lives as possible, acknowledging that time is critical for ongoing rescue efforts.
