175 Women Murdered in First Seven Months of This Year: 'Their crime is wanting to make their own decisions!'

A stark report reveals that 175 women have been murdered in Turkey during the first seven months of the year. The data comes from the Women's Coalition to Stop Femicides, highlighting a grim trend in gender-based violence across the country.

Of the women killed, 12 percent lost their lives while asserting their autonomy and attempting to make decisions about their own lives. This statistic underscores the dangerous environment many women face when seeking independence or challenging patriarchal norms.

Şirin Yalıncakoğlu, a representative for the coalition, criticized current government policies. She argued that the "Family Year" initiatives, intended to strengthen family structures, are inadvertently increasing interference in women's personal lives. Yalıncakoğlu also pointed to a failure in the effective implementation of protection mechanisms designed to safeguard women at risk.
