19-year-old struck dead by thunder in Enugu community

A 19-year-old man, Chukwujekwu Eyah, has died after being struck by thunder while he slept at his maternal grandmother's home in Ogboli, Ugbaike, Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State. The incident reportedly happened around 1 a.m. on Monday.

Eyah was sleeping on the same bed with four other boys, who were unharmed. Relations of the deceased confirmed his death and stated he was buried on Wednesday. They have conducted a traditional investigation into the cause of the incident.

According to community beliefs, Eyah's death is linked to instruments his late father, who was known as a rain-maker, allegedly used. Relations claim Eyah had gone to these instruments, kept at his mother's residence in Iheaka, without performing the necessary traditional rituals. They believe this led to the thunder striking him alone.

The community tradition dictates that such instruments must either be maintained according to custom or returned to their original owners. Eyah's family reportedly failed to return the instruments after his father's death. The circumstances remain unverified by police, who have yet to issue an official statement.
