2027: INEC displays Tinubu, Shettima’s credentials, calls for public scrutiny

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has initiated a public display of academic credentials and personal particulars submitted by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, candidates for the upcoming 2027 general election.

This exercise, which began on Saturday, adheres to Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, requiring INEC to publish candidates' information within 21 days of receiving it. The 'Form EC9' contains details on candidates' qualifications, personal information, and affidavits. The commission stated that the documents are available for public scrutiny.

INEC's published documents reveal Tinubu's academic background, including a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, awarded in June 1979. His National Youth Service Corps records indicate service from December 1982 to November 1983. His employment history includes roles at Mobil Nigeria Limited, the Lagos State Government, and the Federal Government. Notably, entries for his primary and secondary school attendance are listed as '0000,' with only his university qualification providing a specific year. His date of birth is March 29, 1952, making him 74 years old.

In contrast, Shettima's submitted documents offer a more comprehensive educational trajectory. His records trace back to Lamisula I Primary School (1972-1978) and Government Secondary School, Potiskum, where he obtained his West African Examinations Council results in June 1983. He holds a degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri (1989) and a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. His NYSC service ran from October 1989 to October 1990.

INEC has informed the public that they can apply for certified true copies of these nomination forms and other submitted documents. The commission also noted that individuals may pursue legal recourse if allegations of false declarations or forgery arise concerning the submitted particulars.
