305 female inmates moved from Atlacholoaya to new Cuernavaca prison; old facility to become geriatric center

In a significant move to reform the penitentiary system, 305 female inmates have been transferred from the State Center for Social Reinsertion of Women "Morelos" in Atlacholoaya to a newly constructed facility in Cuernavaca. The transfer operation began Monday night and concluded early Tuesday morning, according to the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).

The relocation is framed as part of the executive branch's policy to enhance the prison system, moving towards a more efficient, humane model that respects human rights. The SSPC stated the new facility will better serve the health, hygiene, and well-being of the women, while also protecting the best interests of their children.

Following the transfer, the former women's prison in Atlacholoaya, which has a capacity for over 500 inmates, will be converted into a state geriatric male correctional center. This new facility will cater to elderly male inmates with special needs, particularly those suffering from chronic-degenerative diseases or disabilities, as well as those requiring special care due to their health conditions. It will be classified as a low-security correctional center.

The decision to move the inmates was based on a comprehensive analysis of the Atlacholoaya center, identifying the need for more dignified and functional facilities. The operation involved over 200 personnel from various security and custodial units, with observers from the State Human Rights Commission and the SSPC's General Directorate of Internal Affairs present to ensure proper procedure.
